We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Lombard
Barbara A. Steg, 95, of Burr Ridge, IL, formerly of Sycamore, IL, passed away at home on February 5th, 2022.
Barbara was the beloved wife of the late Paul O. Steg; dear mother of Lise (Mark) Thorsby; loving grandmother of Trevor Swanson; twin sister of William Mitchell and sister of the late Betty Dragoo. She will be missed by many other loving family members and friends.
Barbara brought a vibrancy and enthusiasm to everything she touched! A classically trained violist and violinist, she found great joy in creating beautiful music and sharing it with this world. She passed on her love of music to her family and the many students she taught over the years, in private lessons, at Oberlin College, as a faculty member at Northern Illinois University (NIU), and later as a church choir director. She also formed a number of performance groups; Barbara’s Band, the Chimera Players, SHE, and Barb Wired to name a few. She performed and recorded many other collaborations over the years with friends and fellow artists. Barbara was especially proud of her CD “Natural Acts” created with her dear friend and fellow performance artist, Jeff Abell.
Barbara was also a gifted artist and poet. Her house was always adorned with her imaginative creations: paintings in many different mediums, masks, hand painted furniture in vibrant colors, her ingenious “golf ball tree”, and her puzzle boxes, which were the original Rubik’s cube. Her unique poetry painted exquisite scenes in our minds eye.
Those who knew her in her NIU days may remember her participation in marches for women’s rights, against war, and her enthusiastic support of many other causes dear to her liberal heart. Of particular note was the time when she chained herself to a tree on campus, protesting the removal of a forested area to make way for a new building. As her husband Paul was the Chair of the Music Department at that time, this made for interesting discussions at home. This enthusiasm continued up until her very last day here. Barbara was always passionate about anything or anyone she cared for!
Barbara will be missed beyond measure by her family and friends. But she will live on in the love, joy, and beauty she brought into their lives and to this world. We take solace in the belief that wherever she is, she is happy and free from any of the constraints of this physical world and is engulfed in the love, joy, and beauty that she so freely showered upon others.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Cog Hill Golf Club 12294 Archer Ave, Lemont, IL 60439 on Thursday October 6th from 1:00PM to 3:00PM with the family sharing memories at 1:30PM.
