Karen Marie Zack, age 81, of Lombard, passed away on July 30, 2022.
Karen, who was the daughter of the late Alexander and Marion (nee Corley), grew up in Chicago, went to Providence St. Mel in Chicago (class of 1958), and was a resident of Lombard for 48 years.
Karen is survived by and loved by her husband of 54 years, David Zack; children Dianne (Doug) Smith of Fairfield, Iowa, David (Lauren) Zack of Flower Mound, Texas, Julie (Matthew) Huttner of Naperville, Illinois; grandchildren Kelsey and Michael Smith, Elaine and Lilian Zack, and Aidan Huttner; sister Dianne Flemister of Florida; nephew Dominick (Debbie) Santarelli of Florida, Judy (Edward) Ptaszek of Ohio, Kathie (Sal) Dellanno of New Jersey, Jeremy (Tiffany) Gross of Colorado, Michael (Lori) Gross of Oklahoma; and many cousins and friends.
Karen is preceded in death by her sister Patti Jo Gross and brother Michael Poley.
Karen spent the majority of her working years following her passion of cooking and baking, but early on worked as a switchboard operator for the telephone company, and as a wig stylist both in retail and out of her home. Karen's food service work performed in the high school cafeterias of Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn and Willowbrook in Villa Park, where she most likely decided to work to be close to her children who attended Willowbrook. Karen finished her working years as the manager and head cook and baker of a private cafeteria for Continental Whitecap in Downers Grove.
Outside of work Karen spent much of her time in her own kitchen, cooking and baking. She cooked for her loving, and always hungry husband David, and baked for too many people to name, including her husband, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, neighbors, Lombard police and fire departments, and most anyone else she befriended. Baking cookies, fudge, and other sweet snacks was her specialty and passion, which she mailed around the country keeping so many happy and full. Karen was also an avid reader, remembered everyone's special occasion dates, and so deeply loved her family.
In lieu of gifts and flowers, Karen would have appreciated donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929; Ann & Robert H.
